Psychological Therapy & EMDR

Siobhan Quinn is an HCPC-registered Counselling Psychologist and accredited EMDR therapist with over 20 years' professional experience.

Life can sometimes feel difficult even when, from the outside, things appear to be going well. You may find yourself struggling with anxiety, self-criticism, shame, overwhelm, or a sense of being stuck. Past experiences, including trauma, can continue to shape how you feel and relate to yourself and others. You may also be autistic, recently diagnosed, or beginning to recognise how years of masking and adapting to fit in may have affected you.

My aim is to provide a warm, accepting space where you can feel understood and supported. Together, we can explore your experiences at your own pace, make sense of the challenges you are facing, and find ways forward that feel compassionate, authentic and sustainable for you.

You are welcome to contact us to arrange a free, 20-minute introductory conversation with Siobhan. This is an opportunity to explore what you are looking for, ask questions and consider whether working together feels like the right fit. There is no obligation to proceed.

My Approach to Therapy

I believe the therapeutic relationship is central to effective therapy. My priority is that you feel able to be open and honest, without fear of judgement. Building trust and understanding what matters to you is always my starting point.

Many people spend a great deal of time and energy on worry, shame or self-criticism, even when they appear confident and capable to others. Therapy can provide an opportunity to recognise these patterns, understand how past experiences may still be affecting you, and develop a kinder and more compassionate understanding of yourself.

My approach is flexible and tailored to each individual. I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness and EMDR. Together, we can explore which approaches may be most helpful for your individual needs and goals.

EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological therapy that can help people who continue to be affected by traumatic or distressing experiences.

EMDR is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a recommended treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

How Does EMDR Work?

Sometimes, difficult experiences continue to affect how we feel and respond to situations, even many years after they happened.

EMDR uses a structured approach to help process distressing memories. During parts of treatment, you may be asked to focus on a memory while following side-to-side eye movements, alternating sounds or gentle taps.

The aim is to reduce the emotional distress associated with these memories, allowing them to become less overwhelming and easier to manage.

What Can I Expect?

EMDR is a collaborative process, and treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

Before beginning memory processing, I will take time to understand your experiences, explain how EMDR works and help you develop ways of managing difficult emotions.

We will explore together whether EMDR is an appropriate approach for you and work at a pace that takes account of your needs and circumstances.
